How Satellite Internet Works

Exede Broadband links your computer to the Internet with a high-speed connection through one of our high capacity satellites. Your Exede service connects your home or small office to the Internet at speeds much faster than a dial-up connection, and at speeds faster than many DSL or wireless services offer.

With WildBlue’s new Exede12 service, file transfer speeds may be more than 200 times faster than dial-up and can be as much as 8 times faster than a typical 1.5 Mbps DSL service. A small 30 inch satellite dish, about the same size as a satellite TV dish, and a satellite modem are all you need. ViaSat provides the equipment and our nationwide team of certified professionals will install the service at your home for free.

Exede Satellite Dish

The Exede satellite dish (30″ x 28″) receives signals from one of our satellites, and sends signals your home back up to the satellite. No phone line or other wired connection is required. Your Exede dish can be mounted on your roof, on a wall, or on a pole in the ground near your house. WildBlue provides professional installation of the Exede satellite Internet equipment which will take approximately 2-3 hours.

Exede Satellite Modem

Your Exede satellite modem will connect one or more computers to the Internet. Using a standard “plug and play” Ethernet interface, the Exede modem connects directly to all your computers and to your other Internet-enabled devices.

Your Computer and other Devices

The Internet is no longer just for use with desktop computers. Exede works with virtually all modern Internet devices, including both PCs and Macs. Plug in a wireless router, and Exede connects all of your favorite mobile devices – laptops, iPhones, iPads, iPods, Android phones and tablets, video players and just about anything else – to all the rich content today’s Internet has to offer.

Video streaming excels on the Exede Broadband network. Our technology works the same way as satellite TV, and delivers smooth streaming video with less buffering and delay than many other types of broadband service.

ViaSat Satellites

ViaSat (the company that provides WildBlue and Exede Broadband services) operates the world’s highest capacity state-of-the-art Ka-band satellite system. We provide Internet services in all 50 states with our four satellites high above the earth, in geostationary orbits more than 22,500 miles over the equator. Our newest and most advanced satellite, ViaSat-1, was launched in October 2011 and has more capacity than all other satellites above North America…combined! ViaSat is the world’s leading innovator in satellite communications technology. We provide our customers the highest speeds and most compelling broadband Internet services available via satellite.

ViaSat Ground Systems

ViaSat has over 30 large satellite earth stations located throughout the U.S. and Canada that very efficiently connect our customers directly to the Internet. Each earth station consists of large antennas, microwave transmitters and receivers, and other Internet routing and switching equipment to quickly send traffic from the customer’s terminals to the Internet and back. The entire network is designed to be redundant and highly reliable, and is remotely controlled from our Network Operations Center in Denver, Colorado. ViaSat’s gateways to the Internet are through our state-of-the-art fiber optics backbone, running at up to 10 Gbps and providing WildBlue and Exede customers with excellent speeds and performance.
